What's Scoop about?

For years, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York had been suffering from rumours relating to his close friendship with convicted paedophile and billionaire, the late Jeffrey Epstein. In 2019, he accepted a suggestion to seem on BBC present affairs programme Newsnight to aim to dispel these rumours — but the rocky interview finally achieved the other consequence.

He moreover was criticised extensively for his lack of regret for Epstein's victims, and simply three days following the interview, announced that he was "stepping back" from royal duties.

In line with Deadline, Scoop is written by Peter Moffat, and tailored from Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Surprising Interviews, a ebook written by former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister, who herself was chargeable for arranging the 2019 interview with Prince Andrew. The Netflix film will dramatise the lead-up to and behind-the-scenes of the 49-minute Newsnight special, which aired on the BBC again in November 2019.

Scoop will give viewers "the inside monitor on the women that broke by means of the Buckingham Palace institution to safe the inside track of the decade that led to the catastrophic fall from grace of the queen's 'favorite son,'" the film's logline says. "From navigating Palace vetoes, to breaking via to Prince Andrew's internal circle, the high stakes negotiations and depth of rehearsal — to the jaw dropping interview itself."

Who stars in Scoop?

Whereas early rumours tipped Hugh Grant to play Prince Andrew, Netflix revealed Rufus Sewell — famed for enjoying the "villains" in hit films like The Vacation, A Knight's Tale, The Legend of Zorro and more — might be getting sweaty palms as Prince Andrew. Gillian Anderson is about to star as BBC journalist Emily Maitlis, Keeley Hawes as Amanda Thirsk — the previous personal secretary to Prince Andrew — and Billie Piper as Sam McAlister, who negotiated and secured the booking.

Of the casting, McAlister herself stated she was elated Billie Piper has been chosen to play her.

"Watching Billie Piper, considered one of my favourite actresses, play 'me' might be a pinch myself second and I'm really thrilled to be involved in this movie," she shared.

Directed by& Emmy and BAFTA winner Philip Martin,& the filmmaker likened the movie as a backstage cross to both Buckingham Palace and the BBC, as the two institutions conflict over the story of a lifetime.

"I need to put the viewers inside the breathtaking sequence of events that led to the interview with Prince Andrew — to inform a narrative a few seek for answers, in a world of speculation and varying recollections," Martin advised Netflix. "It's a film about energy, privilege and differing views and how — whether in glittering palaces or high-tech newsrooms — we decide what's true."

When is Scoop being released?

Whereas the primary stills have been launched, there's no official phrase yet from Netflix as to when Scoop will probably be released, aside from a suggestion of it being later in 2024. Each time it does happen, little question we'll all be tuning in like we did with the original interview.
